Chapter Fourteen

When the phone rings the next morning, I’m sure it’s Evie checking up on me, but Amy’s number flashes on my screen. I barely have time to say hello.

“Amber is freaking out,” she whispers.

“Why are you whispering?” I whisper back.

“Because I’m hiding in a supply closet at work. I didn’t know who else to call.”

I’m flattered that she’s reaching out to me, but I also know that I’m probably last on the list of people she wanted to call. “What’s going on?”

“Amber is in a state because, apparently, Silas recreated their first date at Everwood’s Coffee House with every detail covered down to the shirt he was wearing and the drink she ordered.”

My palms are sweaty, and my heart races as guilt pulses through my body. “That is sick,” I manage to say.

“Oh, I’m just getting started. Somehow, he was able to get inside our old gym and take a picture of himself with a corsage because he and Amber apparently exchanged their first words at a Sadie Hawkins dance. Isn’t that messed up?”

I touch the bruise on my knuckle that appeared overnight—I guess I hit Silas harder than I thought. “Super messed up. I wonder what she said to him that was so memorable?”

“Amber wouldn’t say.”

She probably doesn’t remember. “It was such a long time ago.”

“She’s driving me crazy,” Amy sighs. “I see her all day at the clinic, then she barges into my house whenever she wants—you were there; you saw it happen. It’s like I can’t hide from her. She followed me into the bathroom yesterday. I was hiding in there to eat my lunch.”

The germaphobe in me wants to express her disgust, but I keep my tone sympathetic. “That’s awful.”

“I thought I could handle her bridezilla behavior, but it’s a bit too much. I emailed her an article on couples who choose to elope in the hopes that she and Tanner would just go get hitched in Vegas.”

“And?”

“She told me that seventy percent of destination weddings end in divorce, and I should know this because I’m part of the sad statistic.”

“Ouch. That sounds like a bullshit statistic, though. Does she have any documentation to back up her argument?”

Amy chuckles. “What do you think?”

“What are you going to do?”

“I don’t know,” Amy says with a sigh. “I can’t quit as maid of honor—because then I’d have to look for a new job. And, honestly, I’d feel pretty awful doing that to her so close to the wedding. I just need one night where she can’t find me—just one night of peace and quiet where I don’t have to talk about last-minute seating arrangements or anything else wedding-related. Oh, and wine. Lots of wine.”

“Why don’t you come over to my parents’ house tonight? I highly doubt she’ll be able to track you down here.”

I can almost hear Amy thinking on the other end of the line. Amber’s nasally voice reaches the supply closet and breaks the awkward silence. “Oh, no. She’s right outside. I’ve got to go. Thanks for the invitation.
